Northern Ireland Trailers
Further to my post of about 18 months ago, I'm still looking for any photos of Northern Ireland Trailers' lorries. I do hope that I shall be able to afford to restore my Atkinson, JRN 38H, back to its original N.I.T. livery one day, and bring it home to the Dock for a photo session!

ahoy
quit going away to sea when i got married.started work on the dock in 1958(just before/or round about then)ferry boats, most certainly ..CEDRIC..DORRIC and a couple more after these.busy in those days, COAL BOATS..BANANA BOATS TIMBER BOATS PULP BOATS..CLAY BOATS(china)a great crowd of guys down there in those days, to name a few..tommy moss, eric hornby, john o-rorke,challa, silver sleeves, hens meat, yard dog, lobby door, preston yank. many many more characters. who would take up to much space on here.there was an ELITE gang down there known as the BLUES...they had first call on all the money earning vessels that happened to come alongside.yup, had a few jars in the neptune, but never heard about it being haunted..the main watering holes for the dockers in my time was the WHEATSHEAF...STEAMER...JUNCTION...AND THE SHIP IN.quite a few are no longer with us, ut JIMMY STEELE is still going strong, can be found in the ship in on sunday lunch.coming back to the haunted question, the only place on that dock that i found haunted was NUMBER 3 WAREHOUSE. if you got sentenced to that place, you were indeed a lost soul.

Memories
Yes the docks are a very emotional place for myself especially the 70s where i spent many happy times with my father who worked there , i can see still in my minds eye all the ships that came through the locks . I last visited early this year , but even though im now living in Kirkcaldy in Fife , Preston my birth plae isnt far away from my mind . One question i must ask ...why hasnt the city council somehow set up a small visitor centre of the docks as and when it was a working port ?? Surely there must be pictures and many memories around , enough to show people what it was like in its hey day ?
Chris Freeman - 24/10/2005

"If it makes you happy then why are you so sad"...This was the thought that was running through my mind whilst reflecting upon my life at the docklands. It may not be the most beautiful place in the world but its somewhere that means a lot to me...it provides me with the opportunity to chill out and reflect upon life.Just a brief note to sing your praises...(could do with disposing of those dead birds though)
Mrs Happy - 19/10/2005

What will be will be!!!
Following my stroll around the beautifull docklands at Preston, I have been emotionally all over the place... How can one docklands cause so much emotional variation? God knows! Anyways im going to try and relax now with the thought 'if it is meant to be then it will be' and stop stressing. Im going to chill out and let life take its course! Because emotions are what life is about, and the good emotions always outweigh the bad!!!
Mr Happy - 17/10/2005

My Walk
The other day i went on a leisurely walk around the docks and it was very nice. I liked the fact that all the lights worked. It didnt take too long walk round!! I thought the bridge was cool. I will return soon!

Debris in Preston Docks
We have responded to Ms. Clarke's Message Board item with what we hope is a comprehensive answer and have invited her family to visit the marina to witness the efforts to which we go to maintain a debris-free water area.
Preston Marina - 07/10/2005

My parents came to stay with me last weekend, they live in somerset, and came for my birthday, we decided to go to the docks to see the railway and the marina, we parked and started to walk towards the railway looking in to the docks as we went, what a lovely sight we saw, at least 6 dead birds floating in the docks along with several bottles, a football and just general rubbish, we weren't impressed neither were my parents. It was the first time we had been down there and probably the last, and it didn't make a good impression on my parents either, I don't think they will recommend it to anyone else!

Re Ferries from Preston to IrelandI can confirm as a former passsenger that there was a ferry to Larne. I made the crossings in about 1966.

chris freeman - 18/05/2005

Your site has brought many boyhood memories, I used to haunt the dockside in 1949 as a 13yr.old. I would access by the railway track entry by the tunnel. Now as a 68yr.old i'd love to revisit the docks again to see what's changed. The roll an old tank landing ship.on/rolloff ferry was named the Empire Fredrich. All for now from down under by the sea.regards andy.
andy palmer - 27/04/2005

Please has anyone any information on the Tug Boats in 1914 my grandfather was a captain on these his name was Benjamin Thomas. He died after falling into the Dock and becoming ill in 1915.I think he lived in Mersey Street.I really need a copy of The History of the Ribble by Barrens as I believe there are crew lists in this book.I would be very willing to pay a good price for a copy.Thank you
Irene Jordan - 05/01/2005

I have a 8mm film of around Preston which has footage of the steam dock railway. Plus there is footage of the market area etc. Also Broadbents shop. Taken in the mid 1960.s. Would this be of any interest to you?.
Sue Copestake - 26/12/2004

I would be most grateful for any information relating to WILLIAM BELL, who, according to family legend, was variously Harbour Master at Preston Docks, a diver at the Docks, had some connection with a vessel called the 'Bickerstaff'. This would have been early-mid 20th Century. He was the brother of my wife's Great Grandfather, Thomas Bell, (who drove the 'Flying Scotsman') and a son of a de Houghton. Thankyou for any assistance you feel able to give.
Peter Skinner - 02/12/2004

I have an Atkinson tractor unit (JRN 38H) that was new to Northern Ireland Trailers Limited, and operated from Preston Dock from 1969 to 1975. I am keen to obtain copies of photographs of any N.I.T. lorries, either in digital form, or orginals that I can either buy or copy. I would very much like to restore the lorry to its original livery, but the piggy bank needs to grow first! P.S. Further to Denise Gardner's (no relation!) request, the Neptune was a modern building and was, if I recall correctly, on the junction of West Strand and Marsh Lane, next to the English Electric/BAe buildings.
Chris Gardner, Tel: 07831 856788 - 06/08/2004

I have a book called The Last Tide: A History of the Port of Preston which gives the measurement of the dock in yards, and I worked out that a circuit of the dock is 1.5 miles. It's one of my walks, too.
olga mathews - 27/07/2004

Please does anyone know how far it is all the way around the docks. My brother is interested as this is one of his walks, he does often.
Pat Booth - 10/07/2004

I heard a rumour at Skippool that Preston Docks is closing its mooring & marina facilities. Has anyone else heard this rumour & is there any truth in it?
Olga Mathews - 01/06/2004

I am interested about your proposal to operate a passenger train service on Strand Road - where will passengers be able to access the service and how frequent will it operate? Is there an opportunity to extend the service in to the town centre?
Dominic Mullen - 26/05/2004

I am a member of the Historical Diving Society and I am researching into the working divers of Preston Dock. If anybody has any memories, recollections or pictures please get in touch. (No amount of information is too small). Thanks.

Hello, I was wondering if you could tell me anything about the fire at the docks in 1958. My family was staying at the Highbank Hotel; I was about five, and was woken one night by a red glow through the window. My father lifted me up to see and the docks on the other side of the water were ablaze. I'd love to locate a newspaper article about the fire, or perhaps a photo of the hotel?
Lisa in Melbourne, Australia - 18/04/2004

Further to Shirley's request for information about ferries to Ireland from Preston, I have found some information on the internet under this link for P & O Ferries. It seems that there was indeed such a ferry service from 1948-1973
Neil - 28/03/2004

Can anyone let me know if there is a ferry to Ireland from Preston?! My parents seem to think there used to be one but neither my husband or I have ever heard of it. We live in Southport by the way. I look forward to any replies with interest.
Shirley Rimmer - 22/03/2004

Pity that this site isn't used more often. It could be a very interesting site, with lots more photographs. Re: The mentioned painting... perhaps the Harris Art Gallery would be a good place to have the painting hung, so that all visitors could reflect on the 'old' docks. David Hughlock. Please visit our homepage at www.webspawner.com/users/thehughlocks

Can anyone help I am presently thinking of mooring my boat at preston marina its a small cabin cruiser with an outboard engine, would there be a problem with snobbery at preston. At my last marina I was treated unfairly because my boat was not deemed to be right for the marina
